Bull or bear market? Whichever - it's supercheap

We have often referred to Kindle pricing as being as similar to the New York Stock Exchange with changes occurring frequently. Here's a supercheap book with all the tips on making money in the market - you might want to get a copy before the price goes up.

The meltdown in the credit markets, the decline in housing prices, and the turmoil in the stock market has rocked the world of the everyday investor. Bearish investment experts are touting historical research that suggests both real estate values and the stock market could stagnate for years to come, thus imperiling the retirement planning of millions of Americans.

In The Bull Inside the Bear, investment manager and former Federal Reserve economist Rob Stein argues that the economy is entering uncharted water and investors need to actively manage their portfolios to take advantage of new opportunities and avoid risky sectors.

The key will be to stay nimble and be ready to increase stock holdings if the economy recovers strongly and be ready to substantially reduce stock holdings if the current problems continue to weigh down economic performance.

The Bull Inside the Bear is supercheap today for only $1.42.

When the corporate raider meets the lady

Jayne Ann Krentz is a well-known contemporary fiction writer. She also writes historical fiction under the name Amanda Quick and futuristic fiction under the name Jayne Castle. Twist of Fate, one of Krentz' early novels, has received high reviews.

Hannah Jesset was a determined young woman with a talent for guidance and an unusual inheritance. Gideon Cage was a jaded corporate raider with an eye for the deal and for the ladies - Hannah in particular.

Going to bed with Gideon Cage had been perhaps the most important thing Hannah had done in her life. But her own words of warning came back to haunt her: Understanding a man didn't buy safety for a woman.

Twist of Fate is available today for only $3.93.

Looks like we have been Penguined

You may have noticed that when you try to purchase some of our cheap reads from earlier weeks that the prices have increased significantly. Many of these increases are the result of Amazon reaching an agreement with Penguin for the agency model.

At first glance, to us it appears that Penguin has priced their e-books quite high, even for books published two, three, and four years ago. If they maintain these higher prices, they won't be selling e-books to these two cheap chicks.

We love our e-readers, but when we can get one of their books at the used book store, the thrift store, or the library book sale for $1 or less, we will choose that option.

As we all know with Kindle book pricing, it's a moving target. Maybe Penguin will realize there is a market for cheap books and price accordingly.

Extraordinary Life by Charles Stanley

Dr. Charles Stanley is a much-loved television and radio pastor and preacher. For years he has led evangelical Christians through his candid teaching of practical living.

In this book, Dr. Stanley explores the non-negotiable life principles that should be reflected in the life of every Christian.

To many in the world, the Christian faith is a set of rules and regulations. But Jesus himself did not teach his followers dos and don'ts; he taught them foundational principles of life.

Using examples from his own personal experiences, Biblical personalities, and case studies, Dr. Stanley demonstrates how these key life principles impact life in the 21st century-and how they make us, as Christians, different from those who live their lives according to preference rather than principles.

Today, Dr. Stanley's book, Living the Extraordinary Life, is available for only $3.21.

The war is still being fought

This Memorial Day weekend, in honor of all who have given their lives for our freedom, thank you for the ultimate sacrifice.

"I first met al-Qaeda before there was an al-Qaeda, way back in the winter of 1984. It was an encounter that came within a split second of costing me my life."

So begins Rob Schultheis's gripping account of his journey into the heart of one of the world's most dangerous places, on the trail of the world's most wanted man. A veteran war correspondent, Schultheis offers a first-hand look at how the seeds of al-Qaeda were planted by foreign jihadists in the 1980s, before most Americans knew what the word "jihad" meant.

He then offers a radical assessment of why bin Laden remains at large, detailing the complicit role Pakistan has played in both offering him sanctuary and in helping al-Qaeda establish an almost impregnable stronghold in the Middle East.

Finally, fresh from a recent visit to Afghanistan and armed with analysis of current satellite imagery, Schultheis makes his case for where exactly Osama bin Laden is hiding—and why the U.S. government is not acting on this information.

Today you can purchase Hunting bin Laden for your Kindle for only $3.54.

A touching story from World War II

James McBride offers a powerful and emotional novel of black American soldiers fighting the German army in the mountains of Italy around the village of St. Anna of Stazzema in December 1944.

Four soldiers from the army's Negro 92nd Division find themselves separated from their unit and behind enemy lines. Risking their lives for a country in which they are treated with less respect than the enemy they are fighting, they discover humanity in the small Tuscan village of St. Anna di Stazzema.

This is a refreshingly ambitious story of men facing the enemy in front and racial prejudice behind; it is also a carefully crafted tale of a mute Italian orphan boy who teaches the American soldiers, Italian villagers and partisans that miracles are the result of faith and trust.

Miracle at St. Anna is available today for only $2.66.

SuperCheap Free! Democratizing Innovation

SuperCheap Free! Democratizing Innovation by Eric Von Hippel.

Product Description:

Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users—both individuals and firms—often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.

The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products—most notably in the free and open-source software movement—but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive.

Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses—the custom semiconductor industry is one example—that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R&D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. The goal of a democratized user-centered innovation system, says von Hippel, is well worth striving for. An electronic version of this book is available under a Creative Commons license.

How many mornings in 75 years?

Ever had any desire to be at the same job for 20 years? 30 years? 40 years? Some folks find the job they love early in life and they don't ever leave. 50 years? 60 years? Goodness, isn't it time to retire?

Shirley Povich was the Dean of American Sportswriters. As a columnist for The Washington Post for more than seventy-five years, he was an eyewitness to the most thrilling moments in American sports, including: the legendary 1927 Dempsy-Tunney "long count"; the celebrated 1938 race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral; the 1946 signing of Jackie Robinson by the Brooklyn Dodgers; Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series; the Ali-Frazier fight of 1971; and the murder of eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

But Povich's columns were about more than sports; they reflected the dramatic changes in American society over the course of the 20th Century. Driven by a strong sense of social justice, Povich called for the integration of major league baseball in 1939, and twenty years later he was still at it, attacking Washington Redskins owner George Preston Marshall for having an all-white team.

For the 100th anniversary of his birth, Povich's children-David, Maury, and Lynn-and his colleague at the Post, former sports editor George Solomon, have pulled together this panoramic collection of Povich's most beloved columns. The result is a front-row seat to the most awe-inspiring sports moments of our American Century.

All Those Mornings is available today for only $2.23.

Don't put that in your mouth!

I grew up in rural America - open spaces, fresh air, hard work on the farm. As toddlers, we were pretty much like other kids, except we often found interesting objects to try to eat. If my mother said it once, she said it ten thousand times, "Don't put that in your mouth!" Apparently Anthony Bourdain's mother never uttered any such words.

Bestselling chef and No Reservations host Anthony Bourdain serves up a well-seasoned hellbroth of candid, often outrageous stories from his worldwide misadventures. Whether surviving a lethal hot pot in Chengdu, splurging on New York's priciest sushi, or singing the praises of Ecuadorian line cooks and Hell's Kitchen dives, Bourdain is as provocative, engaging, and opinionated as ever.

The Nasty Bits is an irresistible tasting menu of food writing at its outrageous best-served up Bourdain style. A thirty-year veteran of professional kitchens, he is the host of the television series No Reservations and the executive chef at Les Halles in Manhattan.

Today you can buy The Nasty Bits for the Kindle for only $3.08.

From Washington to Hollywood

He's led a colorful life, in the middle of some of the most exciting years in American history.

With the nation at war in the 1940s, twenty-two-year-old Jack Valenti flew fifty-one combat missions as the pilot of a B-25 attack bomber with the 12th Air Force based in Italy. In the 1960s, with the nation reeling from the assassination of a beloved president and becoming embroiled in a far different kind of war in Vietnam, he was in that fateful Dallas motorcade in 1963, flew back to Washington with the new president, and for three years worked in the inner circle of the White House as special assistant to President Lyndon Johnson.

Then, for the next thirty-eight years, with American society and popular culture undergoing a revolutionary transformation, Valenti was the public face of Hollywood in his capacity as head of the Motion Picture Association of America.

A deep thinker on the current economy situation

As if we didn't have enough to be concerned about, this book promises more. David M. Smick is considered one of the most insightful financial market strategists in the world. When he writes a book, he knows his subject and we may be wise to listen.

The World Is Curved picks up where Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat left off, taking readers on an insider's tour through the private offices of central bankers, finance ministers, even prime ministers. Smick reveals how today's risky environment came to be -- and why the mortgage mess is a symptom of potentially far more devastating trouble.

He wrestles with the two questions on every one's mind: How bad can things really get in today's volatile economy? And what can we do about it?

Drawing on riveting anecdotes in language anyone can understand, Smick explains:

How the churning cauldron we call China (the next great bubble to burst) represents a powerful threat to every one's pocketbook

How Japanese housewives have taken control of their nation's savings, and why it matters to us

How greed-driven bankers and investment bankers have put every one's pensions and 401(k)'s at risk

Why today's "incredible shrinking central banks" may not be able to save us when the next crisis hits Why the big-money Russian, Chinese, Saudi, and Dubai sovereign wealth funds represent a tectonic shift in global financial power away from the United States, Europe, and Japan

Why the world desperately needs a "big think" financial doctrine to guide today's dangerous ocean of money

The World Is Curved is the rare book that speaks simultaneously to the Wall Street, Washington, and London elite, yet its apt storytelling shows Main Street readers how to survive in these turbulent times.

The World Is Curved is available today for only $3.47. we may be wise to read it.

SuperCheap! The biggest rockstar not in the USA

Every one of us can name at least five rockstars we idolized during our teen years. Would you name Dean Reed? He was one of the biggest rockstars on earth - just not in America.

Dean Reed had one of the strangest careers in the history of popular culture. Failing to gain recognition for his music in his native United States, he achieved celebrity in South America in the early 1960s and then, unbelievably, became the biggest rock star in the Soviet Union.

His albums went gold from Bulgaria to Berlin. He made highly successful movies and, naively earnest, was an unwitting acolyte for socialism. Everywhere he went, he was mobbed by his fans. And then, in 1986, at the height of his fame, he drowned in mysterious circumstances in East Berlin.

Drawn magnetically to his story, Reggie Nadelson pursued the mystery of Dean Reed's life and death across America and Eastern rope. As she traveled, the Berlin Wall came down, the Soviet Union crumbled, and Reed became an increasingly alluring figure, his life an unrepeatable tale of the Cold War world.

Baseball season is well underway and the football books are cheap

We are college football fans at our house, but we become pro football fans when the championship game is played. As we don't have a pro team we regularly follow, we tend to cheer for the underdog.

More than Just the Catch, written by David Tyree and Kimberly Daniels, is the story of the underdog. The awesome catch made by Tyree to win the championship for the New York Giants in 2008 was one of the most spectacular plays in football history.

In this book, Tyree gives you an inside look at life and faith of players in the NFL, the physical program that got him where he is today, and a behind-the-scenes account of the catch that positioned the Giants for their Super Bowl win. Let his story inspire you to a life of perseverance, faith, and success. You may never be a Super Bowl hero, but you CAN be a hero every day in your own life.

You can purchase More than Just a Catch today for only $3.49.

Cheaper than a doctor visit, read it and call us in the morning

If you are woman, you will no doubt identify with several of the medical issues listed in this book synopsis. The book is much cheaper than a co-payment to a doctor. You don't have to get on the scales if you read the book and by-pass a doctor's visit.

Dr. Xiaolan Zhao has treated thousands of women suffering from fatigue, PMS, infertility, depression, cancer, menopausal symptoms and other gynecological disorders - health problems that are all too common in the West but less so in China, where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been an integral part of women-s lives for thousands of years.

As a physician originally trained in Western medicine who later took up the practice of TCM, Dr. Zhao has seen how effective the Chinese approach is for her patients, and her book will help American women incorporate its wisdom and practices in our lives. Sharing stories from her own life and the lives of her patients, Dr. Zhao shows that we have nothing to reject about our feminine selves, and explains how we can develop new relationships with our bodies and our emotions.

There is so much every woman can do in terms of ongoing and preventative self-care to improve her health and vitality and prevent illness. By making simple changes in diet, exercise routine, sex life and the way we deal with stress and our emotions, we can profoundly improve our health now and into the future.

Ancient Healing for Modern Women is available for only $2.58. That's even cheaper than one of those out-dated magazines in the doctor's waiting room.

Left, right, center?

Remember the two things you never talk about when visiting the in-laws? Politics and religion. Everyone has an opinion and the differences rise to the top.

Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson, political science professors from Yale and Berkeley, have political opinions and wrote a book about them in 2005.

Here's a synopsis of the book:
The Republicans who run American government today have defied the normal laws of political gravity. They have ruled with the slimmest of majorities and yet have transformed the nation’s governing priorities. They have strayed dramatically from the moderate middle of public opinion and yet have faced little public backlash. Again and again, they have sided with the affluent and ideologically extreme while paying little heed to the broad majority of Americans. And much more often than not, they have come out on top. This book shows why—and why this troubling state of affairs can and must be changed.

Off Center: The Republican Revolution and the Erosion of American Democracy is available today for the cheap, cheap price of $1.31. I'm thinking now that the Republicans are no longer the majority of anything, this book could still be relevant if you just change the party affiliation and names.

Poignant novel of a country in turmoil and maternal love

Manil Suri's second novel is the mesmerizing story of modern India, richly layered with themes from Hindu mythology.

The Age of Shiva is at once a powerful story of a country in turmoil and an extraordinary portrait of maternal love. Meera, the narrator, is seventeen years old when she catches her first glimpse of Dev.

She wonders if she can steal him away from Roopa, her older, more beautiful sister, who has brought her along to see him.

When Meera’s reverie comes true, it does not lead to the fairy-tale marriage she imagined. She escapes her overbearing father only to find herself thrust into the male-dominated landscape of India after independence. Dev’s family is orthodox and domineering, his physical demands oppressive.

Meera's unforgettable story, embodying Shiva as a symbol of religious upheaval, places The Age of Shiva among the most compelling novels to emerge from contemporary India.

The Age of Shiva is available today for the Kindle for only $2.86.

The Greatest Generation

An amazing generation of men and women arose during the Second World War and changed the face of America and the world forever. Many of us proudly know these now elderly folks. Decades ago they were young men and women, starting their lives and some of them losing their lives in the war.

Around the time of his own father's funeral ten years ago, David Everitt read a letter from a friend of his mother's first husband, Sam Kramer, who was killed in combat just days before the end of World War II.

The letter establishes that Sam was a war hero, and that his death was not merely an accident of war. While Everitt had consciously ignored the history of his mother's first marriage, even though she had saved each of Sam's letters from the battlefront, he is now prompted to learn more about Kramer and about his mother's past.

Remembering Sam takes readers back to World War II America, to the days of Rosie-the-Riveter patriotism, the brutality and terror of the front lines, and the aftermath of war on its civilian survivors.

Remembering Sam is available today for the Kindle for only $2.45.

How does a country shape its literature?

Remember Brit Lit (or British Literature for the purist)? I took the class during my senior year in high school and only remember reading Shakespeare.

Nation and Novel traces English prose fiction from its late medieval origins through its stories of rogues and criminals, family rebellions and suffering heroines, to the present-day novels of immigration.

Major novelists from Daniel Defoe to the late twentieth century have drawn on national history and mythology in novels which have pitted Cavalier against Puritan, Tory against Whig, region against nation, and domesticity against empire.

The English novel is deeply concerned with the fate of the nation, but almost always at variance with official and ruling-class perspectives on English society.

Nation and Novel is available today for $3.65.
