Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Father's Day! Thank you for being the man in the lives of your children. May you have a wonderful day.

To celebrate the day, we are listing a few books for fathers - all cheap - because Dad has told us many times that money does not grow on trees.

The last book featured in this group is a Western, because Dad loves Westerns. He was the reader in the family and taught us to love to read. As we were growing up, he often said, "I've bought you books and bought you books. . . " Happy Fathers Day, Dad!

Become A Touchdown Dad, the Breakthrough Book by David Justus, has helped hundreds of fathers turn their love of football into a winning parenting style. Written in the storytelling tradition of The One Minute Manger Series, this book is the inspiring story of one man's challenges in being a father. With the help of a fictional college-football team, a fatherhood coach, and a narrative that is both informative and entertaining, you will see many of the typical problems all men face in being a father, from enforcing the rules to protecting their children to being a good provider.

The book is divided into four quarters covering the areas of child discipline; establishing rules, rewards and consequences; improving communication; protecting children; and, goal setting and employment strategies. Dads and everyone else can buy Become a Touchdown Dad for only $2.97.

DAD: The Man Who Saved the Planet

Recalling his growing-up years in Los Angeles following World War II, author James Pratt describes twelve lessons he learned from observing his father, an unpretentious and uneducated man who acquired little of this world's wealth but who lived an honorable life.

"For some, these twelve virtues may seem antiquated, out of date, or hopelessly provincial," writes Pratt. "I don't see it that way. What my father practiced and conveyed to me were principles that made it possible for children to grow up in a stable, two-parent home, where there was a widely accepted code of decency, honesty, honor, and patriotism."

This book recalls simpler times, when Southern California was still filled with dusty little towns and when a man could have purchased the bean fields that have become LAX for $5 an acre - if he had somehow had five dollars. Readers will enjoy this loving retrospective, a fitting tribute to dads everywhere.

You can purchase DAD: The Man Who Saved the Planet for only $3.99.

Sins of the Father

There'd never been a policeman killed in the line of duty here. It was a small town in the Midwest, for God's sake. Cassie closed her eyes and made a silent wish: Please don't let anyone else die tonight.

In the heart of America's breadbasket "where life moves at a slower pace and love feels as sure as the seasons" a series of attacks on police and firemen shock the inhabitants of Mt. Vista.

The violence begins with a vicious attack on two young women in Chicago, revealing a dark family secret. Then a horrendous storm and a crime of opportunity plunge Mt. Vista Officer Dillon Stone into an eerie battle of wits with a madman.

Murder. Vengeance. Two generations. A killer is on the loose and Dillon has precious little time to solve a mystery spanning decades. But can he do it from the other side of the grave? He must find a way. His lover's life, the town he is sworn to protect, and millions of dollars are on the line.

Twenty years later, clearing the misconception

Cedar Rivers is on a strange errand. A doctor sidelined into the strange world of the first dot-com boom, he has come to Albany, New York, in between business in Iceland and home in Silicon Valley, to meet a woman he hasn’t seen in twenty years.

Then a Chuck Taylor–shod proto-Goth with chipped black nail polish, Kat is now a literary up-and-comer who needs Cedar to vet her memoir—an account of the summer they were sweethearts. As if that weren’t enough, she’s written parts of it from his point of view.

Through an intense weekend in a snowed-in motel room, Cedar and Kat relive their most painful memories: Before they had a chance at first love, Kat’s mother and her new fiancé dragged Kat off on a family trip. Kat returned with a secret, one which—when she shared it with Cedar—set off a series of drastically miscalculated assumptions that dominoed into a moment of startling tragedy.

Misconception, written by Ryan Boudinot, is available today for only $3.96.

A sharp, sad portrait of the vagaries of the literary life

He's an elderly novelist who never really left a lasting impression on the literary world. She's a naive graduate student, intent on a mission.

Leonard Schiller is in his seventies, a second-string but respectable talent who produced only a small handful of books. Heather Wolfe is an attractive graduate student in her twenties. She read Schiller’s novels when she was growing up and they changed her life.

When the ambitious Heather decides to write her master’s thesis about Schiller’s work and sets out to meet him—convinced she can bring Schiller back into the literary world’s spotlight—the unexpected consequences of their meeting alter everything in Schiller’s ordered life. What follows is a quasi-romantic friendship and intellectual engagement that investigates the meaning of art, fame, and personal connection.

The dangers of peer pressure - a chilling novel

Peer pressure! That one social phenomenon causes many teenagers to take actions they would never consider on their own. Nina De Gramont has written a novel clearly showing the danger of peer pressure.

When Catherine Morrow is admitted to the Esther Percy School for Girls, it's on the condition that she reform her ways. But that's before the charismatic and beautiful Skye Butterfield, daughter of the famous Senator Butterfield, chooses Catherine for her best friend.

Skye is a young woman hell-bent on a trajectory of self-destruction, and she doesn't care who is taken down with her. No matter the transgression-a stolen credit card, a cocaine binge, an affair with a teacher, an accident that precipitates the end of Catherine's promising riding career-Catherine can neither resist Skye's spell nor stop her downward spiral.

De Gramont's chilling novel is a portrait of an adolescent girl so thoroughly seduced by a peer that she willingly follows her to ruin. Caught in a world that is both appealing and astonishing, these young women are sexual beings with the minds of teenagers: willful, selfish, daring, and cruel-all the while believing they're utterly indestructible.

When truly left alone - a debut novel

Ever thought about what would fill your mind if you were left on your own for days, weeks, even months without another soul to befriend?

Georgina Harding's debut novel, The Solitude of Thomas Cave, is the story of a man left with his thoughts and past to haunt him.

It is August, 1616. The whaling ship Heartsease has ventured high into the Arctic, but the crew must return home before the ice closes in. All, that is, save Thomas Cave. He makes a wager that he will remain there alone until the next season, though no man has yet been known to have survived a winter this far north.

So he is left with provisions, shelter, and a journal - should he not live to tell the tale. As the light recedes, so begins Cave's lonely contest with the realities and the phantasms of the Arctic winter. He is vulnerable to blizzards, avalanches, bears - and his own demons: his fear, his apathy, his superstition and his memory. For in this wilderness that is without human history his own past returns to him: the woman he had loved, the grief that drove him north.

Beautiful, strange and haunting, The Solitude of Thomas Cave is an unforgettable first novel and is available today for the Kindle for only $3.26.

The victims were calling out, but what?

If you think your life might be just a bit out-of-control, read this book. This woman has problems. . . .murder is just one of them.

Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef has lived all her days in the small town of Port Dundas and is now making her way toward retirement with something less than grace. Hobbled by a bad back and a dependence on painkillers, and feeling blindsided by divorce after nearly four decades of marriage, sixty-one-year-old Hazel has only the constructive criticism of her old goat of a mother and her own sharp tongue to buoy her.

But when a terminally ill Port Dundas woman is gruesomely murdered in her own home, Hazel and her understaffed department must spring to life. And as one terminally ill victim after another is found—their bodies drained of blood, their mouths sculpted into strange shapes—Hazel finds herself tracking a truly terrifying serial killer across the country while everything she was barely holding together begins to spin out of control.

Through the cacophony of her bickering staff, her unsupportive superiors, a clamoring press, the town’s rumor mill, and her own nagging doubts, Hazel can sense the dead trying to call out. But what secret do they have to share? And will she hear it before it’s too late?

In The Calling, Inger Ash Wolfe brings a compelling new voice and an irresistible new heroine to the mystery world. Today you can purchase the book for only $3.27.
