Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Father's Day! Thank you for being the man in the lives of your children. May you have a wonderful day.

To celebrate the day, we are listing a few books for fathers - all cheap - because Dad has told us many times that money does not grow on trees.

The last book featured in this group is a Western, because Dad loves Westerns. He was the reader in the family and taught us to love to read. As we were growing up, he often said, "I've bought you books and bought you books. . . " Happy Fathers Day, Dad!

Become A Touchdown Dad, the Breakthrough Book by David Justus, has helped hundreds of fathers turn their love of football into a winning parenting style. Written in the storytelling tradition of The One Minute Manger Series, this book is the inspiring story of one man's challenges in being a father. With the help of a fictional college-football team, a fatherhood coach, and a narrative that is both informative and entertaining, you will see many of the typical problems all men face in being a father, from enforcing the rules to protecting their children to being a good provider.

The book is divided into four quarters covering the areas of child discipline; establishing rules, rewards and consequences; improving communication; protecting children; and, goal setting and employment strategies. Dads and everyone else can buy Become a Touchdown Dad for only $2.97.

DAD: The Man Who Saved the Planet

Recalling his growing-up years in Los Angeles following World War II, author James Pratt describes twelve lessons he learned from observing his father, an unpretentious and uneducated man who acquired little of this world's wealth but who lived an honorable life.

"For some, these twelve virtues may seem antiquated, out of date, or hopelessly provincial," writes Pratt. "I don't see it that way. What my father practiced and conveyed to me were principles that made it possible for children to grow up in a stable, two-parent home, where there was a widely accepted code of decency, honesty, honor, and patriotism."

This book recalls simpler times, when Southern California was still filled with dusty little towns and when a man could have purchased the bean fields that have become LAX for $5 an acre - if he had somehow had five dollars. Readers will enjoy this loving retrospective, a fitting tribute to dads everywhere.

You can purchase DAD: The Man Who Saved the Planet for only $3.99.

Sins of the Father

There'd never been a policeman killed in the line of duty here. It was a small town in the Midwest, for God's sake. Cassie closed her eyes and made a silent wish: Please don't let anyone else die tonight.

In the heart of America's breadbasket "where life moves at a slower pace and love feels as sure as the seasons" a series of attacks on police and firemen shock the inhabitants of Mt. Vista.

The violence begins with a vicious attack on two young women in Chicago, revealing a dark family secret. Then a horrendous storm and a crime of opportunity plunge Mt. Vista Officer Dillon Stone into an eerie battle of wits with a madman.

Murder. Vengeance. Two generations. A killer is on the loose and Dillon has precious little time to solve a mystery spanning decades. But can he do it from the other side of the grave? He must find a way. His lover's life, the town he is sworn to protect, and millions of dollars are on the line.

Written by Catherine E. Shuler, Sins of the Father is available for only $5.00

On the Edge

Pamela Britton has written this story of Rebecca Newman, widow of five-time Winston Cup champion Randy Newman. Rebecca has inherited Newman Motorsports, and she needs a new driver. Against the advice of everyone around her, Rebecca makes the decision to hire an unknown NASCAR driver, Adam Drake.

And she's proven right, as Adam wins race after race. Rebecca, widowed for four years, is drawn to Adam off the track, too, and his precocious 10-year-old-daughter, Lindsey, adds to the attraction. After all, Lindsey convinced Rebecca to consider her dad, and now the little girl is playing matchmaker.

Like Rebecca, Adam is still healing--he was dumped by his ex-wife for another race-car driver, so a new relationship would represent a big gamble. These seemingly broken individuals find that love can make them whole again, and it just may be a wild ride getting there.

On the Edge, a touching story of a father finding love, is available today for only $4.50.

Growing as a person

Amazon did not provide much of a description of Everyday Enlightenment. Reviewer "musshin" gives insight to the book with this review:

Dan Millman has done extensive training in meditative disciplines, mystical practices, and other endeavors in the search for enlightenment. While he found these practices to be highly inspirational and wise, he also realized that these practices didn't do any good if you couldn't perform your everyday tasks in an enlightened manner. Thus Everyday Enlightenment.

The book offers 12 practical and well thought-out-of areas or gateways to pass through for optimal growth as a person emotionally, physically and spiritually. Some of the gateways are: self-worth, money, health, emotions, taming the mind, trusting your intuition, sexuality, love, and serving others.

As you apply the suggestions in each chapter you'll find yourself becoming more successful with that particular gateway. When you combine all the insights and wisdom you've learned from the gateways you can't help but live in a more satisfied way.

Today Everyday Enlightenment is supercheap for only $1.99.

Everything was fine until the sibling was born

Maybe it is because I come from a larger family, but the title of this memoir intriguing. I don't identify with either sister, but the family dynamics I understand.

At four, Shannon Kring spends her days stuffing anything she can get her hands on into her red leather suitcase, playing 60 Minutes with her Barbie dolls, and basking in the limelight cast on her by her over-attentive mother. Then her sister Natalie is born. Everyone loves the well-behaved baby.

Realizing she isn't the novelty she once was, Shannon reclaims her parents attention by playing with matches, chewing her father's tobacco, and calling her cat a cocksucky. Once placed in the background, Natalie is kept there though Shannon's playroom domination and dramatic schemes. Convinced her sister is the favored child, Natalie takes to her room, where she regularly holds pity parties.

Sister Salty, Sister Sweet is a coming-of-age story with dark humor, straight-up characterizations, and bald honesty. Today you can purchase Sister Salty, Sister Sweet for only $3.50.

Relying on reason

We live in an era of obscenely expensive political campaigns, perceived and real political corruption, corporate greed, fraudulent investment and banking schemes, and biased if not deliberately distorted reporting of information by the media.

There is only one effective path left to individuals that may guarantee the protection of their civil liberties and financial well-being: total reliance on reason and objective judgment, rather than blind acceptance of claims based on ideology or leap of faith. Whereas leap of faith may be warranted in very special occasions, it seldom provides solid ground for protection.

The history of our nation consists of enlightenment periods during which reason prevailed, as well as of dark periods during which both reason and objective judgment were totally ignored.

In Reason We Trust, written by Dr. John Chrysochoos, is available today $1.87.

Hope from a mother who has hurt

When tragedy strikes our families or when our sons or daughters choose an unfortunate path in life, it's hard to reconcile the present with all our hopes for the future. Our children's decisions may conflict with the way we raised them, or we may lose contact as family members shut each other out.

In When Your Child Breaks Your Heart, beloved author Barbara Johnson tells the story of how, as a wife and mother, she faced so many challenges--the crippling of her husband from a debilitating accident, the death of two sons, and the choices of a third son that caused him to stay away from family for years. But even through her pain, she set out on a journey of survival and restoration that included a steady diet of laughter, joy, and hope.

In this gripping book, Ms. Johnson tells her family's searing story honestly and compassionately, and she reveals how she was able to emerge triumphantly with her faith intact and her spirit unbroken. She offers hope to families facing similar circumstances, sharing how God brought her through the deep waters without letting her drown--and how He will do the same for us.

When Your Child Breaks Your Heart: Help for Hurting Moms is available today for only $4.79.

Knit one, purl two, laugh, repeat

By no means a proficient knitter, I still love to pull out the needles and knit and purl the stitches to create a scarf, sweater, slippers, or afghan. There's only one thing better than knitting - knitters. Creative, friendly and candid, I love spending time with knitters, clicking the needles and discussing life.

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's Free-Range Knitter: The Yarn Harlot Writes Again reminds us of the joy we felt upon first encountering her hilarious and poignant collection of essays surrounding her favorite topics: knitting, knitters, and what happens when you get those two things anywhere near ordinary people.

For the 60 million knitters in America, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (a.k.a. the Yarn Harlot) shares stories of knitting horrors and triumphs, knitting successes and defeats, but, mostly, stories about the human condition that ring true for everyone--especially if you happen to have a rather large amount of yarn in your house.

Funny, unique, and gleeful in her obsession, Pearl-McPhee speaks to knitters of all skill levels in this delightful celebration of craft and creativity. Today you can purchase Free-Range Knitter: The Yarn Harlot Writes Again for only $4.26.
