Andy on Andy

Chairs. Neat people. Ugliness. War. Over six decades of intrepid reporting and elegant essays, Andy Rooney has proven a shrewd cultural analyst - unafraid to question the sometimes ridiculous, often surprising facts of our lives.

Rooney's great gift is telling it straight, without a hint of sugar coating, but with more than a grain of truth and humor. His take on America? It's just amazing how long this country has been going to hell without ever having got there. On food? There's more dependable mediocrity than there used to be.

Today you can purchase Andy Rooney for only $4.35.

In a community where dissent of any form is discouraged, Emma finds it difficult to rein in her tongue–and often doesn’t even try to do so, fueling the animosity between her and the colony’s charismatic and increasingly autocratic leader, Wilhelm Keil.

Eventually Emma and her husband, Christian, are sent along with eight other men to scout out a new location in the northwest where the Bethelites can prepare to await “the last days.” Christian believes they’ve found the ideal situation in Washington territory, but when Keil arrives with the rest of the community, he rejects Christian’s choice in favor of moving to Oregon.

Emma pushes her husband to take this opportunity to break away from the group, but her longed-for influence brings unexpected consequences. As she seeks a refuge for her wounded faith, she learns that her passionate nature can be her greatest strength–if she can harness it effectively.

Happy Fathers Day!

The last book featured in this group is a Western, because Dad loves Westerns. He was the reader in the family and taught us to love to read. As we were growing up, he often said, "I've bought you books and bought you books. . . " Happy Fathers Day, Dad!

DAD: The Man Who Saved the Planet

Recalling his growing-up years in Los Angeles following World War II, author James Pratt describes twelve lessons he learned from observing his father, an unpretentious and uneducated man who acquired little of this world's wealth but who lived an honorable life.

"For some, these twelve virtues may seem antiquated, out of date, or hopelessly provincial," writes Pratt. "I don't see it that way. What my father practiced and conveyed to me were principles that made it possible for children to grow up in a stable, two-parent home, where there was a widely accepted code of decency, honesty, honor, and patriotism."

This book recalls simpler times, when Southern California was still filled with dusty little towns and when a man could have purchased the bean fields that have become LAX for $5 an acre - if he had somehow had five dollars. Readers will enjoy this loving retrospective, a fitting tribute to dads everywhere.

You can purchase DAD: The Man Who Saved the Planet for only $3.99.

Twenty years later, clearing the misconception

Cedar Rivers is on a strange errand. A doctor sidelined into the strange world of the first dot-com boom, he has come to Albany, New York, in between business in Iceland and home in Silicon Valley, to meet a woman he hasn’t seen in twenty years.

Then a Chuck Taylor–shod proto-Goth with chipped black nail polish, Kat is now a literary up-and-comer who needs Cedar to vet her memoir—an account of the summer they were sweethearts. As if that weren’t enough, she’s written parts of it from his point of view.

Through an intense weekend in a snowed-in motel room, Cedar and Kat relive their most painful memories: Before they had a chance at first love, Kat’s mother and her new fiancé dragged Kat off on a family trip. Kat returned with a secret, one which—when she shared it with Cedar—set off a series of drastically miscalculated assumptions that dominoed into a moment of startling tragedy.

Growing as a person

Amazon did not provide much of a description of Everyday Enlightenment. Reviewer "musshin" gives insight to the book with this review:

Dan Millman has done extensive training in meditative disciplines, mystical practices, and other endeavors in the search for enlightenment. While he found these practices to be highly inspirational and wise, he also realized that these practices didn't do any good if you couldn't perform your everyday tasks in an enlightened manner. Thus Everyday Enlightenment.

The book offers 12 practical and well thought-out-of areas or gateways to pass through for optimal growth as a person emotionally, physically and spiritually. Some of the gateways are: self-worth, money, health, emotions, taming the mind, trusting your intuition, sexuality, love, and serving others.

As you apply the suggestions in each chapter you'll find yourself becoming more successful with that particular gateway. When you combine all the insights and wisdom you've learned from the gateways you can't help but live in a more satisfied way.

Today Everyday Enlightenment is supercheap for only $1.99.

When Leah manages to disable his sailboat and force him to bring his "wife" to her boarding home to be cared for, Jackson has no option but to comply, setting forces in motion that will change both of their lives forever.

Let's call a meeting to discuss

Years ago during the Iran Contra hearings before Congress, senators repeatedly asked those testifying what they were on such-and-such date and time. I certainly would not want to be required to remember my schedule to such detail. A co-worker joked that if he were asked that question, he would reply that he was in a meeting. He thought he had a 70% chance of being right.

Worst Case Scenarios writer Ben Winters apparently has endured his fair share of meetings and has suggestions for how to deal with too many meetings. Mr. Winters has advice for the following situations and more:
--Fake your way through a presentation
--Slip out of the room unnoticed
--Stay awake through agenda overload
--Video conference from the beach

When the law enforcers are corrupt

The Other Chicago Mob is the untold story of organized crime in Chicago but not the "Organization" or Mob; the other Chicago Mob was the Police Department itself. Gary Cohen was a Chicago cop for twenty years and started as a brute and opportunist (part-time thief) and in the course of his career became something more.

Today he has decided that history deserves better than the cover-up that has existed for years; Gary breaks the code of silence and crosses the thin blue line. He details how the corruption worked.

The Other Chicago Mob tells the gripping story of the 1968 Democratic Convention told from the police lines and that the violence that week was no accident. Real police work is not black or white but many shades of gray.

In Chicago at that time it was not about a crooked cop, not about a crooked pair of cops or even a squad; back then it was the entire system, rotten to its core. Its leaders and most decorated members sent to jail and some of the highest ranking belonging to both the first and "other" Chicago Mob. The violence is real, the terror real but also it has humor and human interest.

Twinkle, twinkle little star

If I could keep my eyes open, I would become an ametuer astronomer. But, alas, sleep keeps me from pursuing the idea.

Responsible for the greatest advances in astronomy since Copernicus, William and Caroline Herschel forever transformed our view of the heavens. Trained as a musician, amateur scientist William Herschel found international fame after discovering the planet Uranus in 1781. Though he is still best known for this finding, his partnership with his sister Caroline yielded groundbreaking work, including techniques that remain in use today.

The duo pioneered comprehensive surveys of the night sky, carefully categorizing every visible object in the void. Caroline wrote an influential catalogue of nebulae, and William discovered infrared radiation.

Celebrated science writer Michael Lemonick guides readers through the depths of the solar system and into his protagonists' private lives: William developed bizarre theories about inhabitants of the sun; he procured an unheard-of salary for Caroline even while haggling with King George III over the funding for an enormous, forty-foot telescope; the siblings feuded over William's marriage and eventually reconciled.

Erudite and accessible, The Georgian Star is a lively portrait of the pair who invented modern astronomy. Today you can buy The Georgian Star for only $3.35.

The Sweet Magnolias series - the first four books

Sherryl Woods is well-known for her stories of small town women, their lives, and their loves. She has written several series of books, including The Sweet Magnolias, chronicling the town of Serenity, South Carolina. All of the books have received high marks by reviewers.

The third and fourth books in this series are cheap today as they are selling for less than $5 each. If you were to buy the first four in the series today, the total cost would be $19.23 - still less than $5 per book. As a courtesy to those who might want to read the earlier books, all four are listed. Ms. Woods has written three books to follow these four. All are available for the Kindle and priced at $5.76 each.

Third book in series: Helen Decatur spent a lifetime setting goals—getting through college and law school, opening her own practice, becoming financially secure and establishing herself as one of the most highly respected matrimonial attorneys in the state of South Carolina. Achieving those goals was a breeze compared to the one she's faced with now.

The most driven — and cynical — of the Sweet Magnolias, Helen is forty-two, single and suddenly ready for the family she's put on the back burner for all these years. Unfortunately, having a child at her age comes with lots of complications, not the least of which is the absence of a serious relationship in her life.

But Helen's not the type of woman to wait around for fate to step in. Taking charge of her own destiny puts her at odds with her two best friends, sets sparks flying with a man who doesn't want a family, and leads her straight into the most unexpected complication of all…love.

The third book in The Sweet Magnolias series, Feels Like Family, is available today for $4.50.

Fourth book in series: When Jeanette Brioche helped launch The Corner Spa in Serenity, South Carolina, she found a whole lot more than professional satisfaction. She discovered the deep and loyal friendships that had been missing from her life. But even the Sweet Magnolias can't mend the terrible rift between Jeanette and her family or persuade her that the holidays are anything more than a season of misery.

Pushed into working on the town's much-loved annual Christmas festival, Jeanette teams up with the sexy new town manager. Tom McDonald may be the only person in Serenity who's less enthused about family and the holidays than she is.

But with tree decorations going up on the town square and a bit of romance in the air, Jeanette and Tom take a fresh look at the past and a hopeful look into the future. Together they discover that this just may be a season of miracles after all.

Welcome to Serenity, the fourth book in The Sweet Magnolia series, can be purchased today for only $4.00.

First book in the series: Maddie Townsend might live in a town called Serenity, but there's been nothing calm or peaceful about her life since her marriage broke up. This stay-at-home mom has no job skills, an out-of-control sixteen-year-old son, a talkative fourteen-year-old who's suddenly gone silent, a six-year-old daughter whose heart is broken, an ex-husband whose younger girlfriend is expecting their baby and two best friends who think she's somehow qualified to help them open a fitness spa for women.

But if Maddie is a tad on edge with all that on her plate, it's nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when she discovers that her son's baseball coach has feelings for her and the whole town disapproves. Maddie's faced a lot of challenges lately with strength and resolve, but Cal Maddox may turn out to be more than she can handle. Then again, he could just be the one man in all of South Carolina who can help her find serenity.

Stealing Home, the first in the series, is available today for $5.69.

Second book in the series: Dana Sue might run the best little restaurant in Serenity, but when you're feeding a small town of neighbors, busybodies and best friends, things can get a bit hot in the kitchen. Never mind that she's putting on too many pounds (an occupational hazard for a chef)— she's worried about her too-skinny teenage daughter, Annie, who has been slowly starving herself since the loud, suitcase-tossing, name-calling fit on her front lawn that left Dana Sue minus one cheating husband.

But sometimes life picks strange ways to mend fences. When Annie lands in the hospital, Dana Sue reaches out to the man she loves to hate: Ron, the husband who took her heart when she tossed him out. Ron is still Annie's white knight, even if she's decidedly more tarnished in Dana Sue's eyes. But he still looks good enough to eat, and maybe, just maybe, to forgive. Once, Ron made the mistake of letting go without a proper fight. But now Dana Sue is about to get another taste of sweet devotion from a man tired of feeling like a fool, hungry for that slice of heaven he found with her.

A Slice of Heaven, second in The Sweet Magnolias series, is available today for $5.04.

Rules of Deception only 99 cents!

Kindle Daily blog announced earlier this week that Rules of Deception by Christopher Reich would be priced at $0.99 through July 13. Great time to buy this thriller!

Dr. Jonathan Ransom, world-class mountaineer and surgeon for Doctors Without Borders, is climbing in the Swiss Alps with his beautiful wife, Emma, when a blizzard sets in. In their bid to escape the storm, Emma is killed when she falls into a hidden crevasse.

Twenty-four hours later, Jonathan receives an envelope addressed to his wife containing two baggage-claim tickets. Puzzled, he journeys to a remote railway station only to find himself in a life-and-death struggle for his wife’s possessions. In the aftermath of the assault, he discovers that his attackers—one dead, the other mortally wounded—were, in fact, Swiss police officers. More frightening still is evidence of an extraordinary act of betrayal that leaves Jonathan stunned.

Suddenly the subject of an international manhunt and the target of a master assassin, Jonathan is forced on the run. His only chance at survival lies in uncovering the devastating truth behind the secret his wife kept from him and in stopping the terrifying conspiracy that threatens to bring the world to the brink of annihilation. Step by step, he is drawn deeper into a world of spies, high-tech weaponry, and global terrorism—a world where no one is whom they appear to be and where the end always justifies the means.

Rules of Deception is a brilliantly conceived, twisting tale of intrigue and deceit written by the master of the espionage thriller for the twenty-first century.

Cricket, politics and a sports writer

Some people would consider writing for Sports Illustrated a dream job. Others fantasize about living idyllically in the South of France. S. L. Price got to do both. Assigned by Sports Illustrated to cover sports in Europe, Price relocated his family to a small hamlet in Provence, and then set out to uncover the soul of world athletic competition.

In an attempt to comprehend the planet's most intense and bloody sports, he immersed himself in the cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan. He spent time with Lance Armstrong as the cyclist fended off rumors of performance-enhancing drugs. He argued politics with Olympic athletes in Athens, covered Austria's beer-drenched version of the Super Bowl, and caught basketball fever in Belgrade—as he, his wife, and children tried to adjust to life in a Europe convulsed by terrorism, anti-Americanism, and George Bush's war in Iraq.

Far Afield is an extraordinary memoir of growth, family, and games people play worldwide. Today you can purchase this e-book for only $1.83.
