Boomers and growing up

When I'm lyin' in my bed at night
I don't wanna grow up
Nothin' ever seems to turn out right
I don't wanna grow up
--Lyrics by Tom Waits

Not growing up wasn't an option. We baby boomers are now the older generation and gladly taking the senior discount whenever we can.

Victor Brooks of Villanova University has written a book about the children born during the unexpected surge in the birthrate between 1946 and 1964 who transformed American society. A nation that had projected a population peaking at 150 million, found itself dealing with a booming economy and 70 million children straining the capacity of everything from schools to new suburban housing.

Mr. Brooks identifies the challenge of parenthood in an era of large families and overcrowded homes, and explores the home life, leisure activities, and school environment of children who grew up during the cold war years.

If you just happen to be a Boomer, you just might read about yourself in this book.

Boomers: The Cold-War Generation Grows Up is available today for only $2.35.
