He was a rebellious youth, running away, living as a rogue. He eventually was wounded, left with nothing but a magic atlas, and in a monastery, where he was offered sanctuary.
That's where the story becomes very interesting and the action starts. I could tell you what happens, but let's just say that lots of people want the maps.
