With no other choices, she robs a stagecoach

Written by Jane Candia Coleman, Bandit Queen is based on the true story of Pearl Hart, who robbed a stagecoach, broke out of jail, was recaptured in dramatic fashion and became the first female sentenced to the Yuma Penitentiary in Arizona Territory.

In 1886 she left Toledo, Ohio, to marry Frank Hart, but sixteen-year-old Pearl quickly learns her spouse is an abusive gambler. Unable to accept more from her nasty husband after he broke her ribs, Pearl runs away heading to Phoenix.

Frank follows her trail and continues his ugly treatment of his wife who loses hope. When Frank enlists to fight in the Spanish-American War and with no income and her other choice is becoming a prostitute, Pearl robs a stagecoach. She becomes renowned as the Bandit Queen.
