It takes a village

It takes a village to determine how to survive in a future that might require people to learn how to live in harsh, inhospitable environments and to do so in an ecologically sound and sustainable manner. The village of Gaviotas was founded in the 1970s in Colombia as a study of how scientific and medical professionals, artists, educators and students lived together to create a sustainable and self-sufficient community.

Journalist Alan Weisman has chronicled the story of this experiement in the book Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World. Today the book can be purchased for only $2.93.
